Why Your Business Needs An Operating System
Being an Entrepreneur can be highly rewarding but it’s tough. For many, they go through a series of problems and don’t have the physical and mental capacity to deal with the 101 problems put before them.
The main problems circle around a lack of control in running the business, not generating enough profit for the amount of work invested and quite often, frustration with the people you work with because nobody wants it as much as you do.
At the Masters of Scale event at Home Grown, Jason Green shared how the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) helped him turn his business around and it’s a system he swears by.
“Entrepreneurs often think I am talking about a technology solution such as Microsoft Windows 11 or Apple Mac OS, but this has nothing to do with technology. What I’m talking about here is a proven set of simple, real-world, practical tools, a holistic system to manage the human energy in your business, to help you get what you want from your business and life.
The Entrepreneurial Operating System, EOS, is one such system. I implemented EOS in my business, but do your research. I found that EOS gave my business just enough structure, focus and discipline without stifling our entrepreneurial flair, without the red tape and bureaucracy of a large corporation.
So my passionate plea to business owners and entrepreneurs is “choose an operating system” for your business and run with it.
If you do not choose an operating system, then you and your leadership team are going to waste time and energy figuring out how to operate your business, rather than achieving your vision. With an operating system, you could be saving time and get where you want to go faster and with less effort.”
First detailed by Gino Wickman, many businesses have employed the EOS Model.
I’m sure many of you are wondering at this point, “what is EOS and how will it help my business”?
The EOS Model comprises of 6 key components:
- Vision: Getting everyone in the organization 100% on the same page with where your company is going, and how you’re going to get there.
- People: You can’t achieve a great business without great people.
- Data: Running your business on facts and figures rather than just feelings. When the vision, people and data component is strong, everything in your business becomes transparent and crystal clear.
- Issues: Solving your issues as they arise, you cannot achieve success unless you get rid of all problems by solving them at the root and making sure they don’t resurface.
- Process: “Systemizing” your business by identifying and documenting the core processes that define the way to run your business.
- Traction: Bringing the vision down to the ground and executing it day in and day out.
Jason helps entrepreneurs work on these 6 core areas with specific questions posed with each component. Sounds easy enough? Yet many entrepreneurs are resistant to such a structure and Jason shares why – “I often get push back on this, entrepreneurs think that introducing some structure, focus and discipline will stifle their peoples creativity. In reality, the reverse is true. When you implement an operating system for your business, everyone in your business is rowing in the same direction and knows how the business is run, this frees them up, allowing them to spend more time being creative and innovative.”
